Remembering' The good old days were hard but mighty sweet'By PAIL WILLIAMSGeorge N Hanson looked down at his hands in the dim light of his living room Slowly, he rocked back in the old wicker rocking chair and smiled slightly“You know, hard as they were, the good old days were mighty sweet, yes sir, mighty sweet,” he said softlyFew men in Morcan County are as qualified to speak about the “good old days” as is Nal Hanson On January 31, he celebrated his 95th birthday For those who remain active and alert, age is its own reward Despite his increasing years, Hanson has remained sharp, and his memory is clear He lives by himself in a small house on Old Post Road in MadisonHe was bom and raised on Sugar Creek in Morgan County and has spent his entire life here, and has thus been privileged to see nearly a century of changes in the county and the towns But if a Yankee’s bullet had been a few inches higher, he might have never even been bom“My daddy was a Confederate soldier, and was badly wounded in battle,” Hanson said. He proudly displayed a daguerreotype of his father in his Confederate uniform — a photograph more than a century old “He was shot in the upper part of his leg and the bullet lodged in his hip. He lay out on a mountain side all night, and probably would have bled to death, but it was so cold, the blood wouldn’t flow.”The elder Hanson was a proud man, and survived the war to come home to Morgan County to farm. He brought one souvenir back, though — the bullet that wounded him.”1 never did see it,” Hanson said, “but some of the older children did and 1 guess they lost itHanson's father was farming on his land near Sugar Creek when Hanson was born on January 31, 1881. Growing up in the country, and fanning became a way of life for George Hanson.
