A Mall Carrier Arrested for Robbing the Mall. One more enterprising young man has gotten into trouble and is now on the road to the *Pen.** He un dertook to monkey with “Uncle Sam’ and straight way got into trouble, as the old man won't stand any foolishness. The facts up to date are about as follows: Ashford Zinn, who lives in Valley District, near the Fairfax Schoolhouse, is the sub-contractor for the mail route between Newburg and Masontown via Gladenville and Reedsville, Hia son Willie, a boy about 16 or 17 years of age, has been carrying the mail. For the past six months let ters and registered matter has been lost on this route, and the postal authorities have been quietly inves tigating the matter. Owing to the theft of money sent over this route, the postal officials have been send ing all registered matter around this way for some time now. After working the matter up to a certain point, the officer dropped down upon the scene of action last Sun day and nabbed the guilty party before he knew what was up. Uni ted States Post Office Inspector Sam Hooten and Aesistant U. S. Deputy Marshal arrived at Reedyville Sun day evening and laid the trap for the victim, who walked right into it. Monday morning a registered letter containing marked bills was tailed at Masontown, and the Mar shal and T. J. Watson and others watched between there and Reeds ville, while Mr. ELooten remained at the latter place. About half way between the two places the carrier stopped and rifled the pouch. He took out noversl letters before he found the registered one and threw them in the creek, where they were found by the parties watching him. fle came on to Reedeville and was there arrested by Inspector Sooten, who searched him and found the marked bills. The boy then con fussed the whole business, and snd that he had taken 940 in time, #60 another, aut smaller amounts sev eral other times. Also exits he had a razor that had been sent to Dr. Vox at Masontows, which he ab tracted and had hid at home. He claimed that no one else was con nected with the crooked neas but himself. it sowams that Mr. Zinn himself has been carrying the mail from home to the railroad and back to his house, where he would arrive about 4 P. M., and then the boy, who at tended school, would take it of eve nings after school to Matontown and back next morning by school time, when his father would take it on to Newburg and back by the time school was out. This morning Mr. Zion, waiting for him and becom ing uneasy at the delay, came to Reedaville looking for him and found him in timbo. Mr. Zinn was questioned closely by the officers, and one of them remarked that Als angwers were not satisfactory. The officers then left for Parkersburg with the boy, accompanied by Ma son Watson and others, who were seen along as vitnenses, we the Federal Court is in session there, and they will put them right through. Mr Zinn had taken to the railroml and returned Monday yelling to Reedaville with the emil, where he left it, and what the far ther developments will ha ve unable to tell up to this due — Whether anyone else will be jwoli aft lvabbes the boy i the gave tron, and whether Mr. Zinn will be allowed to still carry thy mall or act ively doubtful. We hope we will not be implicated himself, for it te bad enough for the boy to get into and deries trouble. Enrrox Anovs:— County Commissioner Leroy Shaw comes out in a card last week and makes a very feeble attempt to reply to our charger made the week before. Anyone reading his reply carefully will sce that he dodges the issue entirely and tries to cover up the whole affair by charging it to sormeous and private grievances on my part end claims that I ae actu ated entirely by this and not the public good. Now Mr. Shaw it is ! Bot worth while for you to try to dodge this matter for it will be pin nol on to you next term of court end you will have trouble enough tries to explain it without wasting valuable newspaper space making such brilliant rank movements as you made last week. In fact the least said about it the better for you but ‘fools rush in where Angels dare not tread’ and if you insist on having this all aired to the public we will stay with you. We think from your “reference to illusions’’ in your weekly article last week, that you are way off as to who we are and are barking up the wrong tree and since you are 40 smart about it we will not enlighten you just now, but wait till next court We have a good hand to play and cannot be bluffed. If you want to call it, you must ante up or drop out of the game. We insisted that you have not answered our charge or accounted for that 874 extra al lowance made to the Green's Row Bridge contractors. We can prove the bridge is not according to con tract and allowing the contractors the contract price, wis stretching things enough without donating them $74 additional. Will Mr. Shaw produce the original contract and specifications and explain it as he did when the contract was let, if not why not? Will he say that the work is according to contract and the bridge higher than the old one? Will he dare say that there was no private understanding between him and the contractora, or one of them? = Will he dare aM@lirm that this whole affair was conducted on strictly business principles and nn scenty business, should be?
