J The New-York papers announce, some-what pompously, “ that a patent has neen taken out by Capt. Deming of this port for an improved plan of building ships and other vessels without the usual timbers, knees, 4 c ” This new' plan, so called, is any thing but new. For several years ago a vessel was built in England on this plan i. J e. her bottom and sides were composed of two layers of planks crossing each other, one running longitudinally, and the other perpendicularly ; they thus mutually strengthened and braced each other, and by close joints and a smooth inside surface left no receptacle for rats or foul air. The method was highly praised at the lime, yet as we have heard nothing of it since, we suspect that, like many other ingenious contrivances, it has been found essentially defective in some respects.We find that a writer in the American Rail Road Journal agrees with the remark which we made some weeks ago—that the double canoe of the South Sea Islanders may have suggested the plan of Mr. Burden’s boat. It is rather a singular coincidence that the idea occurred simultaneously to two persons so widely separated as we and the Rail Road Journal correspondent; for though our remarks were published first, yet he could not have seen them when he penned his communication.
