In the five years of playing de fence for the Brandon University Bobcats, Cameron, who is gradu ating this spring, has not reached the Canada West University Ath letic Association playoffs once. He came close one time, in his second season, when BU tied the British Columbia Thunderbirds for the final playoff spot. But UBC got the nod because they had a better goals for and against record. Next weekend Cameron hopes to return the favor. ‘It would be awesome getting in the playoffs,’’ Cameron said fol lowing Brandon's 12-2 victory over the Lethbridge Pronghorns Satur day at the Sportsplex. ‘‘It would be great.” The Bobcats are still in the hunt for the fourth and final playoff berth. Heading into the final week end of regular season play, they now have a 12-14 record and are four points out of the final spot. The Manitoba Bisons, who lost 3-2 to the Calgary Dinosaurs Satur day, are in fifth with 26 points, the Regina Cougars are fourth with 28 points and the Thunderbirds are in third with 29 points. The T-Birds beat the Saskatche wan Huskies 5-4 Saturday, while the Cougars lost 3-2 to the Alberta Golden Bears. The Bobcats will advance to the playoffs if they beat UBC twice next weekend and if both the Cougars and the Bisons loss their final two games. Although it’s a back door ap proach to the playoffs, the Bobcats don’t mind. ‘After each game, you read the newspaper and just hope the right teams keep losing,’’ said Dave Whistle, who scored twice in Satur day’s contest. Brandon, which split two games with UBC earlier in the season, has traditionally struggled in the first game against UBC when playing on the west coast, but coach Mark Arnett hopes a different travel schedule and the thrill of the play off race will change that. ‘We always play a little lethargic in the first game out there,’’ Arnett said. ‘‘But we’re going to go out on Thursday and try to get some ice time there so we can aclimatize a little quicker. . . When you're playing with a little bit of adrenalin, you're willing to bear down a little more.” After pulling off a 11-9 come from behind win against Lethbridge in a sloppily played contest the night before, the Bob cats jumped all over the Prong horns Saturday. Pat Penner also scored twice for Brandon, which led 3-1 and 8-2 at the period breaks. Dean Sex smith, Richard Oswald, Myles Hubbard, Blaine Lautner, Trevor Thomas, Kelly Anderson, Dave Lewis and Kevin Mantell also scored for Brandon. Terry Baustad and Dan Matheson replied for the Prong horns. ‘The guys were a little more pumped up about it because they heard about the outcomes of the other (Friday's) games,” said Cameron. If Manitoba or Regina had won Friday night, the Bobcats would have been eliminated. NOTES — Brandon peppered 56 shots, including 31 in the second period, at Lethbridge goalie Scott Fischer, while Bobcats netminder Doug Roach faced 34 ... The Pronghorns, who are now 1-24-1, were assessed 19 of 37 minors _ _ . Saturday’s game was the final home game for two members of the Brandon Bobcats. Fifth-year play er Randy Cameron will be gradu ating this spring with a Bachelor of General Studies Degree, while fourth-year player Kevin Mantell will graduate with a Bachelor of Education Degree . . . BU's Dave Schettler is expected to be out for the remainder of the season after sustaining a cut on his left knee in the first period of Friday's game.
