Morrell files suitALAMOGORDO — A former Otero County undersheriff has filed a federal lawsuit alleging county officials damaged his career and broke several laws in connection with his recent firing from the force.Rufus Morrell filed the lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Santa Fe against SheriffS.L. “Matt” Matheney andOtero County Commissioners Bill Wade, Ramona Vallejos and Joe Chambers.The lawsuit seeks $250,000 in punitive damages from the county and $10,000 for lost wages and money Morrell said he has spent job hunting.Morrell also said he wants his job back although that is not part of the lawsuit, which was filed Monday.Otero County officials declined to comment on the charges, however had said they had not been served with any papers in connection with the suit.Rufus MorrellMatheney assumed office Jan. 1 and one of his first actions was to fire Morrell, who had been undersheriff since 1984. At the time, Matheney said he had no job available for Morrell. But Morrell said hisfiring was politicallymotivated.
