Titans Drop Normal, 69-62, In Year’s Top PerformanceIllinois Wesleyan’s Titans came through with their sweetest performance of the year last Thursday night, to coast to an easy 69-62 victory over their time-honored Redbirds rivals from Illinois State Normal. The entire Wesleyan squad combined to render the pressing game that the Birdies were playing ineffective, as they latched on to an early lead that they never relinquished. Cal Neeman, Jim Bielen-berg, and Jim Hershbarger tallied 18, 14, and 13 points respectively to pace the offensive slants of the Green and White cagers.Take Early LeadNormal stepped off to an early lead in the opening minutes, but before four and one-half minutes had elapsed, Fran Somers tallied to give the Titans a 10-9 advantage. From there, the Wesleyan cagers pushed their lead to a 12 point margin at half-time.In the second half, the Titans furthered their lead, with reserves carrying the brunt of the duties. Normal trailed by 14 points as they went into the last minute of play, but at that point the Titans were coasting, and the Birds narrowed the gap to the final 69-62 count.Defense at TopsAlthough the big eye catcher in the game was the offensive performance of Neeman, Bielen-berg and Hershbarger, the Titan defense was at its peak in the tilt. Hank Bennett played great defensive ball, as .did the doubletrouble Anderson twins, Harold and Gerald.Normal’s captain and leading scorer, Bob Lockhart, took the Red Bird scoring honors with 15 points, seven of which were from the free throw line. Lockhart had been held to nine points until the final minute, when hefired for two quick baskets and a pair of charity tosses. Leon Hein-le’s 12 points were second high in the scoring column for ISNU.The Titans took advantage of but 15 of their 34 tosses from the free throw line, while the Normal effort in that department netted them 18 points for 31 tries.Summary Wesleyan (69) FGHershbarger, f. 6Bennett, f. ________ 0Bielenberg, c. ______ 7Somers, g. ______________ 0Neeman, g. ______ 8G.
