George Miller Locates For mer Master in Missouri; Files Application George Miller, a local colored man, doesn’t know how old he is exactly, but he does know that he was a slave at one time, and that the son of his former master remembers him, andi his father. Miller obtained informa tion about his parents which he hopes will convince the Old Age Assistance board that he is qualified to receive assistance in his declining years. Miller appeared in the office of Fred E. Deatherage, local Old Age Assis tance department superintendent, to apply for relief. He couldn't prove that he was past the legal age of 65, but he did remember that a long time ago his father took care of livestock for a man named Sims, located near Mexico, Mo. and that his father was a slave. That started the chain which re sulted in the application being wee Sup't. Deathcrage wrote to Sim a son-in-law of the owner of Miller's father, and from Mrs. Margueretta Clark, obtained information that a George Miner, who also was a slave, remembered Miller when the two were boys on the Sims farm. In those days it was the custom of the slaves to take the name of their owner, and Miller's father had taken the name of John Sims in addition to his own name of George Miller, Sr. Miller made an affidavit to the ef fect that he remembered George Mil ler Jr. and Mrs. Clark sent the affid avit to the local office. George Miller, Jr., who was born in slavery, was con sidered as a slave until the signing of the emancipation proclamation. Mrs. Clark, in her letter to Mr. Deatherage, stated that a large amount of the information obtained regarding Muller's early life on the farm near Mexico, Mo., was obtained by a faithful colored servant who is stil in the Clark household.
