‘The Hyde Shoe basketball team was defeated in an overtime-game Tuesday evening by the “Boston Whirlwinds, the score being 44 to 89 Frannie ‘Neal tied the score in the last few seconds “of the game, bait Whitey Benoit, stellar forward of the Whirlwinds, capitalized some smart teamwork to send his team into the lead, whch they then held. Mu sic after the game was furnished by Gus Haley's Roney Plaza’ Orchestra. The class in public speaking at the night high school ‘has taken a new lease on life since John Henry Mor ris, well known attorney, has as sumed charge. The most recent pupils are Dave Fitemaurice, John Kelley, Carl Johnson, and Josh Mc Hugh. The class feels very much the absence of John McBeth, a bright light in Cambridge social circles, a member of the Cambridge Clover Club and a brilliant debater, who left re cently for Florida, with his mother. Former Water Commissioner Bern ard E. McDermott, of Walnut avenue, is planning to spend the rest of the winter at Miami, Florida. His daughter, Miss Alice McDermott, left recently, with some friends by auto mobile and, on arrival at Miami, will engage an apartment and notify Mr. McDermott, who will then go down by train. David Harry, of 165 Rindge avenue, well-known baseball player, has en rolled in Kente Hill Academy. In Maine, Edward Walsh, of 168 Elm street, is now a student at Bentley’s School of Accounting. Frank Butler, of 14 Beech street, has returned from a trip to New York, and is now considering enter ing the firm of Whittemore and Co., caterers. The Shamrock Football Club will conduct a series of Irish and modern dances Thursday and Saturday eve nings in Newtowne Hall, Porter Square. The committee includes John O'Brien, Michael Dolan, Joseph Moor, Thomas Collins, Peter Kirk, James O'Grady, Thomas Sullivan and James Stanton. The Sith anniversary celebration will be held February 21, at Hotel Commander, by the North Cambridge Council, K. of C., with a banquet and entertainment.P. .G. K. Thomas FP. O'Neill is chairman of a large com mittee, Alfred G. Stedman, of the Dennison Manufacturing Co., an expert on let ter writing, was the speaker Tuesday noon at the luncheon of the Indus trial Association, held in the Ken dall square building, Francis Sheehan, of 5 Day street, almost lost his car when it caught on fire Monday evening on Massachu setts avenue. Charles Boudreau, of B48 Massachusetts avenue, was burned on the hand in attempting to put the fire out. The Hoyt Post held its annual elec tion of officers last Sunday, Harold Hannon was elected president; Ed ward Amierson, vice-president; Fred erick McNeil, secretary and treas urer, and Kissig Phillips, sergeant at-arms. Roy Avery was elected cap tain of the baseball team for the coming season. Eliot B. Spalding, city editor of the Cambridge Chronicle, was wel comed back to work this week after a few weeks' illness. Miss Mary O'Connor, secretary of the Cambridge Tuberculosis Assa, has returned to her duties, following an attack of grippe. Phillip Gaffney, of 219 Pearl street, was attacked last Saturday evening, beaten and robbed of $19 by three men for whom the police are looking. A valentine tea and recital will be held by the Cambridge Social Union Tuesday, February 14, j in Brattle Hall, at 3:30. The recital will be under the direction of Mrs. Bacon F. Chow and Mrs. Fred H. Nickels. Tea will be served by Mrs. Marguerite Toohy, Mrs. Katherine V. Kelley, Mrs. Thomas J. Cavanagh, Mrs. Fran ces Campbell and Mrs. Joseph Butch- A sneak thief, who has been steal ing letters from apartment house mail boxes, was nearly apprehended by Miss Edith Allen and Miss H. G. Lawrence, both of 62 Masachusetts avenue, who reported the case to the police. The monthly meeting of the Ward 5 Civic Association was held Monday evening with Mrs. John McKelvie, 12 Rockingham street. Mrs. F. C. Law rence was the speaker of the eve ning and gave a most instructive talk on the Oxford Group. The February whist will be held with Mrs. McKel vie on February 20.
