released from quarantine yesterday morning. The is. “Tartar,” of the “Gibb line, arrived on 8atnrday last, after a long trip from Hongkong, via Singapore and Java. She brought 107 Chinese passengers, and 100 tons of cargo for this port. On the way to Singapore, smallpox broke oat amongst the Chinese passengers. All bends were landed, the ship fumigated, and the ship's officers vaccinated. The small pox cases were left in Singapore, and the rest of the passengers proceeded with the vcesel. Before reaching Java, smll-pox had again broken oat. There were foaf oases, which were all landed at Soorabaya on the 84th ultimo. The Captain, in replying to the osiial question, pat by the Health Officer, as to the health of the ship, made a most unaccountable sad serious mistake, for be stated that be had discharged hie Chinese psseengers for Java, including the smallpox oases, oa the 21st, bat on examination, it was found that his health certificate from Soorabaya was dated the 29th, which was corroborated by the ship's log. Such an error as that, bad it not been discovered in time, might have complicated mattm very seriously, and have given a tangible reason for this being proclaimed an infected port.
