Music of other lands your bag? Are you in trigued with the sounds of Ireland, Wales, Russia, Germany, England, and Scotland among others? Our personal heritage provides a tie-in with some of these nations, of course. Then, too, their exotic sounds supply a welcome change from some of our own, those we hear daily. London Records has issued the first LPs in a new Passport series, one of much merit. The first two releases stress the music of Scotland, “Highland = Pageantry,” starring the Royal Highland Regiment, the well-known Black Watch, and the second, “Famous Sacred Songs,” sung by Kenneth McKellar. Next, the music of Wales, via the North Wales Association of Male Voice Choirs, its Snowdonia Festival of Song. The music of England LP brings us the Band of the Coldstream Guards, Two for Ireland, ‘‘Off to Dublin in the Green,” with Vermot O’Brien, and ‘Let's All Dance to the Gallowglass Ceili Band.” Two for Germany, too, ““Gemutlichkeit im Hofbrauhaus,” with its Blasmusik and Brass Band, and Will Glade’s “‘Geburtstadsstandchen,”’ the Birthday Serenade. “Songs from the Volga” gives us touches of the USSR via the Sea Gull Cossacks. Al, everyone. Biograph has reissued three for the nostalgia ville crowd, especially those who like their jazz instrumental-big band style. There's ‘The Great Soloists 1929-33,” featuring Benny Goodman in the era before he formed his own swing band; “The Great Soloists 1929-36,” with Jack Teagarden playing with the bands of Pollock, Mannone, Trumbauer, the Bostonians, Mills’ Merry Makers, and Cornell’s ensemble. Also “The Boswell Sisters 1932-34,” the early glory years, with the girls warbling with Berigan, the Dorseys, and Venuti, another treasure for collectors. If that’s your crowd, you will remember the marvelous Anita O'Day, the big band singing Star of pre-Korea years. Her newest LP (her own label, via Box 442, Hesperia, CA 92345), is titled ‘Once Upon A Summertime.” She gives out with Honeysuckle Rose, Berkeley Square, Ipanema, Tea for Two and eight other goodies. The first side was taped at a concert in Stockholm. A beauty Rock, briefly noted: SPINDIZZY — “All Out,” The Grin, Nils and Tom Lofgren’s crew, good show. COLUMBIA — “Aerosmith,” a wailing five, the bigget-off for dancing; “Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J.,”” Bruce Springsteen’s music and he sparkles on harmonica, guitar, bass, and conga. EPIC — “Romany,” the Hollies, dated har mony patterns; “Kentucky Gambler,” Robey, Falk and Bod make their wax debut like a half dozen other groups; “Flash Cadillac and the Continental Kids,” just so they don’t crew in your neighborhood; “‘Silver,” The Tranquility, nice ’n easy; “Elf,” a lot of music from only four fellows; “Staten Bros. Band,” Jeff and Mike, plus Mederos and Atkinson, take it back. JOLLY ROGERS/MGM — ““Backroads,”’ Kenny Rogers and the First Edition make the front page. RCA — “Artificial Paradise,” the Guess Who rap at mail order drawings, not all winners; “Subway Night,” the many sides of David Amram, talent unlimited, highly creative. ENTERPRISE/STAX — “River City,” The Anna Divina, who blow it all out, like yesterday. STAX—“Wattstax,”’ 2 LPs, the living word, with such stars as the Staple Singers, the Bar- Kays, Isaac Hayes, Carla and Rufus Thomas, Albert King, Soul Children, and Eddie Floyd, from the original film soundtrack, live and moving; “Do You See What I See?”’ the Bar- Kays own show, love pollution is here to Stay. DECCA — “Back Up Against the Wall,”’ the Atlanta Rhythm Section, plus Al Kooper and Billy Lee Riley, heaps of talent. UNI — “Ebony Rhythm Funk Campaign,” wailing licks from this ensemble, eight soulful strutters, definite jazz-funk roots. KAPP — “A Euphonius Wail,” the hardest rock, the San Francisco melodic screamers. WOODEN NICKLE — “James Lee Stanley,” his own ditties, and backed by a fiddle, banjo, and organ. Good vibes.
