1A FALLON CO, TIMES” ■ V THURS, FEB., 10.1972Johanna GundersonJohanna Gunderson, a resident of this area for 64 years passed away February 6, 1972 at the Fallon Memorial Hospital. She was born December 21, 1879 to Mr. and Mrs. Staale Birkeland at Kristiansand, Norway. There she received her schooling • and special sewing training. In 1902 she came to Balwin, Wisconsin and worked in the home of a minister. The folio ving year shemoved to Minneapolis where she was a dress maker at, Dayton's. She also worked in many private homes as a Dressmaker.In 1908 she was married to John Gunderson. They decided to go homesteading, the popular trend of the day, and early in March Mr. Gunderson left for the West and located at Lorraine, Montana. About three weeks later Mrs. Gunderson and her 17 yea'r old brother bought tickets and came on one of the first Milwaukee passenger trains through this area. Before they reached here the name of the town had been changed to Baker They went to the newly located homestead one miles south and spent the rest of their lives there. The Gundersons started a dairy in 1919 and operated it for 24 years.Mrs. Gunderson and her husband helped organize and build the first Congregational Church in Baker. During the years, many boys found their home a haven and some lived there for years while attending school.She was a member of the American Lutheran Church. She spent much time in the early days working for the Ladies Aid and their BazzarsSurvivors include twosons, George and Martin of Baker, two daughters, Mrs. John G. Wild of Baker and Mrs. C.R. Jones of Marmarth; Eight grandchildren and two ’ great - grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1963, one daughter and one son; Sel-mer who graduated from the local high school.Funeral services were held Wednesday at 2:00 from the Stevenson Funeral ChapeU Rev. Earl Barnard officiated.
