February 4th and 5th, Coe College hosted the Coe In vitational Swim Meet for men and women. The meet was a two day competition with prelims and finals being held on each day. Visiting teams included UW-Steven's Point, and Lake Forest in both divisions, Grinnell in the men's division only, and ywW Green Bay in only the women’s class. Coe finished 3rd in the men's and a very close fourth in the women’s class. The women were only 14 points out of second place. The Kohawks put an assault on the record books that could only be described as unbelievable. Four relay and 13 individual records were set. The Women's 800 Freestyle Relay of Marie Strilich, Kim Russ, Shari Mikrut, and Jeri Whittemore opened the meet with first place finish in a record time of 8:33.53. Other relay records included: Women's 400 Medley Relay, 4:30.63, Strilich, Darcy Hitesman, Whittemore, and Laura Hildebrandt); Men's 200 Medley Relay, 1:47.56, (Mike Horton, Walter Colquehoun, Frank Sammet, and Kevin Novreske); Women's 400 Freestyle Relay, 3:54.77, (Strilich, Russ, Whittemore, Hildebrandt). Of the total of individual records, Darcy Hitesman set two of them, both in the women's diving competi tion. In the 3 meter diving she had a score of 328.05 and also added a score of 328.75 in the 1 meter diving. Another female swimmer, sophomore Shari Mikrut, also broke two records. Shari's first was in the 1650 freestyle in 19:42.05, and the second came in the 400 individual medley in a time of 5:16.60. Men setting individual records included Mike Hor ton in the 100 backstroke (57.84), and the 200 back (2:05.04). Another was Frank Sammet in the 100 butterfly (55.21). Two other Kohawk tankers also got into the record breaking brigade. These two are freshmen Marie Strilich and Kevin Novreske who are featured as this weeks ‘‘Kohawks of the Week.
