HIS is a Copy of a Letter, versatim, writ by an English Gentleman, who accompanied the Czar of Muscovy to Museor, and is now ae Me oze, the place where his Czarith Majesty builds his Ships of War on the River Temas. Poronize, Nov.27, 1698.0.S. Dear Frfina’, ] Wrote to you from Narae in Smedeland the 1gth. of Fun art, and [xpesed by this time to have had One from you s. 4 tome Account of Domestick AE fairs; but since I find I must write to you again, I will give you a‘ full an Account of Matters here, as T may with efry. Ar#, As to the Rebels, which you have heard of, I suppose, mm about Avex last, o« vercom’d by General .owm, there being in all foes of them, designing, if they could have enrred Mu/com, (where they would have been join’d by greater num bers of the same fort ) to have made very short work with all the Foreigners in general, and most of the Ryea Lords that favour'd them. There were about 20 of them kil’d in the fight; he Hang’d, and Be headed, about 200 more after they submitted ; the rest were disperis'd by way of Banishment; but his Czar ish Majesty, the firt night he came to Moscow (which was incognito ) before he slept, very well Rewarded those Soldiers that were in Gord’s party, and the next day, he dispatch’d Expresses to all parts to fetch up the Rebels that were left, and accordingly they were brought to Moscow in a trice, as if they had rid Post, and the same night they arriv’d they were put upon the Rack, to force Confession out of them, 8 of the Chigfeft declared, that their Design was to have Subverted the whole Government, ( being infor med that the Czar was dead abroad) and to have fet Jed his Sister on the Throne. The Strangers were all to have gone to por every Soul, but God was pleas'd to prevent this crue: Design. The Czar cau sed immediately to be built Gallows, in proper pla ces, of all sorts and sizes for them, as also of art shapes and figures in Bucha’s Elements; some were Orogws, Seéfogans, , Paralelapepedon, fome Triangular, fome ‘indmil-vain-fashion, and here and there a tall fine painted carv’d one; for an eminent Rogue; to the end you might know him at a distance ; many were broke upon the Wheel, and the Walls round Mijcew are lin'd with them, hanging two and two upon small Mafts thrust through holes made for Musquets or Ar rows; and I saw a whole Field before the prison Gate cover'd with Fellows with their Heads off. His Majesty blam'd General Gordon that he had nécoune them all to death in the Battle ; for now, says he, J will be thought a Tyrant for dsing what T must be foun'd to do; for after having Rebell’d no less than q times, in his present Majesty’s and Father’s Reign, they were not now to be trusted any more; and thus 2700 of them (being all that were left ) have receiv'd their due Deferts, and now we hope at least to be quiet. ’ The next is the 2674. of October, after having the Bloody-flux in a violent manner for eleven Weeks, his Czarifh Majesty, the Dutch Vice Admiral, Mr. Ney, myself, dc. went down from Moscow to Foroniz, which is 400 miles to the South East of Mujcom, where his Shipping are, which, I believe, are much talk’d of in Europe, ( for now we are in sha ) I do assure you here is a wonderful Navy already, especially for these parts, and so you will say when you know what it consists of. First, here are Launch’d 26 Ships, and upon the stocks ready to launch in the Spring 20 more, of ftonships from 34 to 50 Guns, four large gums, 660 HH Bomb-Vessels in the Water rigg’d, and four Fireshins are a building ; 18 vast large Gallies, requiring about 400 men oon for Brigantines, besides what are already of Ships, Gallies, ... which are at 1 ph, and building upon the River Don, . The Czar has set up a Ship for 54 Guns himself, where he is tork Builder and Foreman ; ’tis all purely his own design rom no Draft of ours, but one may call it an Ab fired of what he has Collected from the Ing ijo and Dutch, with some nicé iarprovements of his own par ticular Observations whilst abroad, and to say the ruth, and not to flatter him, the is likely to be the eft Ship amongst them for failing ac 2thoul Draught of Water. Tam likewise building one of 54.Gun Ship, to be Sharp and floaty, (a palpable Contradition you will say) to go but at Eleven Foot War. ive. N., is laying the heel of one, close to his Granith Majesty, for 53 Guns too; and orders are Building in other Places. I hear there is 2so@o J. Sterling paid by the Lords into the Treasury already, towards the Buil ding 12 Ships more of 50 Guns each. Here are 13 Italian Builders, a great many Dutch and Danes sent by the States General, and the King of Dam.s*. Our selves, only are English and some Greek Builders. What the Czar designs to do with this Navy in this part of the World, is as yet unknown to any ofbs; here are too many Dutch, Gr..k , Itasary Eetp, and ‘eerch Captains co Command these ships, and reco Quien Seamen, all Evertai:’d for 3 Years, and a Dutch Rear Admiral is coming,by which time Iuppo‘e we that I see, please.God to pare the Czar’s Life, « has he Aims at. We want here for neither Timber, ranks, nor Iron, bue Water most of all, the River not being so broad now as the Ships are long, and not yet deep enough, by 2 Foot, for the thips light, then for about a fortnights time in the Spring, when the Snow melts up the Country, here is 18 or 20 foot Water, so down to afape, which Season they must make use of to cary the ships down, as they design, about May. ‘ Tmust not forget to tell you of their Guns of which his Majesty had 300 prefented him by the King of Swedeland. Cables,Sailsmall Arms,Provisicite.that lies here in Magasines ready to be Embark’d. Thus much for the Kaffa Navy, which is a new thing in the World. Warsaw, Jan. 29. The Baron W.ding is arriv'd here from Stockholm, with the Character of Envoy from the King of Sweden, and in an Audience of the Ring he has Offer’d the Mediation of the King, his Master, to Accommodate the Difference betwe xn his Polish Maje sty, and the Elector of Brandenburgh, about Elbing. Des puties are come hither from Sendomir, to desire repara tion may be made them for what they suffer'd by the Marches and Counter-marches of the Troops. They talk of a new Confederacy in the Province of sarmegiia. Beran, Feb 9. The King of Poland, and our Ee@or have agreed that Conferences for Adjusting the Dif ferences betwice them about £:¢ing shall be carried on at Brea in chiefs, they are to meet on the 25t. of Mar, “The Ministers on the part of Poland are to be the Bishop of Piorko, the Waywode of Mariendxy, and another, and on the part of his Electoral Highness Monsieur scoweteax and Montreal Wrmr, and we are in hops that they will soon bring this Negotiation to a good issue.
