Christian musicstation off the airKl’WL radio, a contemporary Christian music station, went offthe air Jan. 15 because difficulties raising money. For more than seven years, the majority of the station’s expenses were paid by Lighthouse Christian Center. But according to station manager Gary Wells, that arrangement was only supposed to last for two years, and then private donations and sponsors were supposed to pick up the tab.“It got to the point where the Lighthouse couldn't carry the bills anymore,” he said. But there is still a possibility the radio station could return to the airwaves. The Federal Communications Commission has delayed revoking the station’s license for 90 days while supporters attempt to raise enough money to continue. Wells said the station’s board of directors set a goal of raising $70,000, an amount equal to one year’s operating expenses. As of last week, the station had raised about $9,000, he said. The station has set a March 15 deadline to obtain the $70,000 because, Wells said, it will take a few weeks to get back on the air.Wells, who is working another job while the fund-raiser continues, said he is hopeful enough money can be raised. “If 365 people donated $20 per month, that would raise over $80,000 per year,” he said. But Wells added that it remains to be seen what will happen.“Either it was a sign from the Lord it’s time for the community to pick up the tab,” he said. “Or it’s time to go off the air.”Previous on-air fund-raisers have never raised more than $7,000, Wells said. To make a donation to the station write to P.O. Box 70339, Fairbanks Alaska 99709 or phone Lighthouse Christian Center at 457-5895.
