Mrs. Gitchell had just finished washing and was lying on a bed taking a rest when she heard a crackling noise, and was surprised to find the en tire roof ablaze. Cummings of cut ting timber in the winter time while the trees are entirely free of sap is one of great advantage over the old plan of summer culling when the tree is full of sap, and explains away the old croaker theory that sugar pine logs will not float. —Snventy Years Ago— Over two months ago it was announced in this paper that young Klein and Bosworth had probably perished in the snow between Johnson’s Station and Strawberry on the Lake Valley road. A searching party was sent out—no trace could be had of them after they left Johnson's. On last Wednesday afternoon Gil bert. W. Knox and Henry Stroup found Klein on the side of the road, about a mile from Straw berry, the snow having melted away so as to expose one arm and one foot of the body which it seems had been mutilated to some extent by animals. The body of Bosworth had not been discovered at last accounts. From the fact that Klein was in his shirt sleeves when found it is supposed that he left blankets and overcoat with Bosworth and pushed ahead, hoping to get help to save the latter. .Ruardian’s care over Supervisor Loveless, who hails from Casum nes township, and for whose be havior, therefore, Kohlert is held responsible. Eighty Years Ago — a. few days ago, in what is known as the “Old Walker por phyry claim,’ between Shingle Springs and N. S. Miller’s place, Nick and Dave Miller and John Shaggs struck a “pocket” from which they took a considerable amount of ore that paid $250 to the pan, and were working quite a large vein that was averaging $10 to the pan, when the water rushed in and drove them out. They will resume operations just as soon as this difficulty can be overcome.
