Mail Pwoijbek Arrested.—For the past eighteen months nuineroua iffciney letters intended for the Freeport Ofllce, and mailed in the vicinity of Peoria and Galesburg, have failed to come to hand. In the aggregate, the l05.ses by the obstruction of these letters have been largo, and recently have botn growing larger rather than sinallor. Special Agent Judge D. V. Beu. of Chicago, took the matter in hand some time ago, and pursued it faithfully, until his suspicions rested upon John Bidaman, Route Agent on the Peoria and Galesburg, (formerly tho Peoria and Oquawka R. R.) Owing to a death in his family, last week, he truiisierred the business, in a measure, to Mr. Peter Van Veclnon, also a Special Agent' of the Department, but engoged priDoipally in tho States of Michigan and Wisconsin. Tho routeagent inquestion, had charge of inaiison that route, and Mr. Van Yecht^n fit once proceeded to test bia complicity in depredations upon tho mail bags-A letter (one of the several yet to bo beard from during the examination), containing a printed circular and $18.75 of marked currency, was mailed at Lewistown on the night of January 21st, to go over Bida-man’s route the next day. This letter was oddressed to tho Secretary of, one of our Insurance Companies. The bag containing it was ^transferred at Yates City, to Peoria aod Galesburg Railroad, and placed in Bidatpun’s care. When Bidaman returned to Peoria, Mr. Van Vecbteo arrested him in the Post Ofllco, and among bills and currency in bis pockets, amounting to over |100, Mr. Van Vechton found $13.50 of the (pODoy which had been mailed iaone of Judge Bell’s decoy tetters. Bida-man was taken tq Chicago for exsmina-tioo. l.ho arrest of this thjef is a cause of great rejoicing to ail interested.
