The program was called, ‘‘The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman,” and if you missed it, you missed out on a beautifully-told piece of American history. The only fault I found in the production was that it was shown too late for children to see. It ended at eleven o’clock.The story was about a black woman, Jane Pittman, who lived to be one hundred ten years old. Her life spanned two centuries, beginning as a slave during the Civil War, to seeing the civil rights demonstrations of the 1960’s. The program described all the setbacks blacks in our country have had to face through the years in their struggle for human dignity. “Setback”enough word, for blacks were killed and tortured by southern whites in order to “keep them in their place.”Perhaps the essence of the story was told by Ned, Jane’s “adopted” son, when he said, “Our enemy is not skin; it is ignorance.” It is an ignorant man who feels he is better than another man because his skin is a lighter or darker shade. I feel this program got this message across.At a time when so many police dramas are clut-finally, is a story of “real” people, and real history without gimmicks. One gets the feeling that the real function of the' open classroom is not primarily to teach reading and writing, but accidently or incidentally the school might get around to doing it. I wonder if the good taxpayers of Glen Cove know what their public school administrators are doing with their children and their taxes?Skip now to anotherpresentation by anothertime the East Meadow schools were spotlighted.
