Voting on some $51,000 in emergency appropriations Thursday, the Vigo County Council’s current special ses sion approved a $15,000 advance for preliminary expenses of the proposed West Terre Haute levee and denied a similar amount for additional jail re modeling. The 7-man body was unani mous in its decision to withhold additional money from the jail for the present, but split 5 to 2 in the vote on the levee ap propriation with Councilmen Howard Leach and David Reed voting no. Council President Everett S. Branam reported their opinion that unfinished work in the present rail remodeling pro gram should be completed be fore additional contracts are undertaken. In addition to $15, 000 which had been asked for window repairs and painting, the council also turned down a $900 request for engineering fees. Predicted Approval. Branam had predicted the ap proval of the levee money which is to be returned to the county’ after the sale of some $100,000 worth of bonds for the purchase of land. He said, “Two days ago I believed the council would have voted against it, but after yesterday’s testimony from advocates of the levee, I am convinced that the majority is for it and I think the council will approve the re quest.” Attorney Robert McPeak and others, representing the levee association, appeared before the council on Wednesday. Tuesday, several residents in or near the area affected by the proposed levee appeared in opposition to the project. The councilmen inspected the $150,000 remodeling job at the county jail Wednesday after noon after they questioned the bequest for an additional $15,000 for painting. Other county offices and funds requesting emergency ap propriations and the amounts approved follow: Clerk, $1,726.75; Auditor, $155; Treasurer, $3,500; Sheriff, $614.25; Agricultural Agent, $3,000; Weights and Measures, $75; Courthouse, $1,200; Jail, $750; County Home, $2,950; Sugar Creek Township Assessor, $15; Veterans Assistance Center, $20; and the Welfare- Glenn Home, $5,380. Branam pointed out that $5,280 of the Welfare-Glenn Home appropriation and the $155 auditor’s appropriation had to do with the transfer of funds from one account to another and did not reflect a need for new money in those depart ments. Those attending Thursday’s meeting included Councilmen Branam, Leach, Reed, Joseph Benna, Frank Mann, John W. Brentlinger and Stanley Cooper; Commissioner Michael Sweeney; County Auditor A. Leroy Lew zader and his chief deputy, Thelma Nasser.
