THE DALLAS-FORT WORTH DIOCESAN COUNCIL OF CATHOLIC MEN WILL SPONSOR THE SAN ANTONIO METROPOLITAN CONVENTION OF HOLY NAME SOCIETIES WHEN: WHERE: Friday evening, February 27; All day Saturday, February 28, and Sunday, March 1, 1959 At the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Dallas and the Statler Hilton Hotel Xd * This convention of Holy Name Societies is at the invitation of His Excellency, The Most Reverend Thomas kK. Gorman, D.D., D.Sc.Hist., Bishop of Dallas-Fort Worth, and with the express approval of the Archbishop and Bishops of the San Antonio Metropolitan Province. What Will The Convention Seek To Do? A. Re-examine the nature, purpose and program of the parish Holy Name Society. B. Explain steps to be taken to develop in our Catholic men the type of leadership that our Church sorely needs. C. This entire convention and all its proceedings will be held against a sad and tragic background, for in this convention in which we will participate we will recall to mind the sufferings of our brethren behind the Iron and Bamboo Curtains. Communism as of 1956 con trolled one-fourth of the world’s surface area. Under this devilish form of government 913,000,000 people live. Many bishops, priests, and laymen have suffered death to bear witness to Christ, and count less millions are denied the opportunity for the fullness of worship that we enjoy. D. The question arises: How long can we remain free from this creep ing, satanic evil? We may escape it, but are we sure that our children will? What can we do? It will be foolish, as the Holy Spirit says, to put our trust in men or in arms. We must gird ourselves with the breastplate of justice. We must by frequenting the Holy Sacraments deepen our union in Christ for only with His Freedom can we be free and have the courage, the vision, and the strength to preserve and extend this freedom to others. E. Therefore, we pray that this Convention will effect a spiritual and intellectual renewal in all who participate. We will attend, in the prayerful hope, that we can learn what we must do so that we can, with God’s mercy, become the Voice, the Ears, the Eyes, and Hands, and the Feet of Christ. Only Christ conquered Satan; only men whose lives are anchored in Christ can place Satan where he belongs. F. Let us pray for those who suffer that through their example we may be alerted and hurry to Christ for help, and let us encourage all our Catholic men to participate in this convention on all three days or, if that be impossible, at least on one. Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us. St. Thomas More, pray for us. _WORKSHOP ‘No. 2 Gold Room How to Conduct a Parish Meeting (This workshop will consider the techniques and responsibilities of offi cers to see to it that the Parish Holy Name Society functions in accord ance with the Constitution, and all program chairmen are encouraged and assisted in the activation of the work they have assumed.) The speakers will discuss the indis solubility of marriage. “Every man that putteth away his wife and marrieth another committeth adultery; and he that marrieth her that is put away committed adultery.” They will discuss also the purpose of the Christian marriage. Speaking of the purpose of the Christian mar riage, Pius XII spoke thus: “The truth is that marriage, as a natural institution, is not ordered by the will of the Creator toward personal perfection of the husband and wife as its primary end, but to the pro creation and education of a new life. The other ends of marriage, al though part of nature’s plan, are not of the same importance as the first. Still less are they superior.” The speakers will also discuss the levils (moral, physical, and psychical) that endanger the integrity and happiness of the Christian Marriage.
