The West Terre Haute Levee Association told its side of the story Wednesday to the Vigo County Council, meeting in special session to consider a $51,000 emergency appropri ation request including that of $15,000 for preliminary ex penses looking toward to con struction of the proposed levee. On Tuesday, the first day of the special session, a dozen residents in or near the area affected by the proposed levee commanded the attention of the seven councilmen for most of the morning while expressing their opposition to the levee. The proposed levee con tinued to hold the spotlight Wednesday as attorney Robert McPeak and others, represent ing the levee association, as sured the council that the project has the willing support of the majority of the residents and will be an asset to the county as well as to West Terre Haute. A number of questions were raised by the councilmen re garding the mechanics of the project and answers were re turned by the association rep resentatives as well as by County Attorney Leonard Kin cade. One question of special con cern to County Auditor A. Le roy Lewzader, as well as the council appeared to be when the county could expect to be reimbursed for the $15,000 ad vance now under consideration. Commissioner Michael Sweeney reported that the county aftor ‘hey said the money would be ‘returned as soon as bonds were sold to finance the purchase of land for the project. A bond issue of some $100,000 is ex pected to be required. Earlier reports indicated that the federal government has al located money to be put toward the construction of the levee, but the association must first secure and provide the land. The council is expected to vote on the levee advance along with some 13 other emergency requests on Thursday.
