BY GRADY GARRETT @GRADYGARRETT TUCSON — For 80 min utes Wednesday night, the Tucson High and San Luis boys soccer teams battled, figuratively, for a spot in the Division II quarterfinals. After 80 minutes, the bat tle turned literal. A postgame brawl in volving both sides marred what was otherwise an epic matchup between two of the state’s more storied programs. No. 11 San Luis, making its 12 consecutive playoff appearance, defeated No. 6 Tucson High, the defending Division II state champ, 2-1. The game was played as well as one would expect, with the teams — tied 1-1 at the half — trading chances until San Luis senior mid fielder Marlon Atondo net ted the eventual game-win ner on a beautiful strike with less than 20 minutes remaining. But as soon as the final whistle blew, things got ugly. The two teams got into it at midfield, with the Bad gers appearing to be the in stigator, and punches were thrown. Benches cleared, but the teams were even tually separated. As each respective side — at least most of the players — be gan walking back toward the benches, another scuf fle ensued. Once again, the teams had to be separated. Then, as San Luis players began gathering their stuff, a group of Tucson High fans spilled onto the field and began getting into it with the Sidewinders.
