Is cottonwood biggest in county?Harold Hays, who resides on a farm in King Township, southwest of Thompson, is wondering if there are any larger trees in the area than those located on the former Rossiter farm which he farms. The land is located in Section 5, Linden Township.Hays estimates the cottonwood trees are 150 years old. The largest is 20’, 9” in circumference (6’, 7” in diameter). Two others are also very large—16’, 6” incircumference (5 Y 3” in diameter) and 14’ in circumference (4\ 5” in diameter). The trees were measured three feet above the ground.Hays’ father, George Hays, says they were large trees, when he came to Winnebago County 70 years ago. He relates that they escaped being cut down during the days of the depression, the early 1930’s. He and his sister-in-law, the late Mary Rossiter, were riding in a bobsled when they saw someone chopping down a tree. Hays recalls that they gave the man the tree he had cut down, butfirmly said, ‘'NO MORE.”If anyone in the area has a tree or trees larger than these cottonwoods, contact Harold Hays, 584-2429.
