Local opinion split on gay banBy JOHN CAPSISAs President Clinton, Congress and the Joint Chiefs of Staff tussle over the issue of allowing homosexuals in the military, the contro-versial matter also is beingganizations interviewed this week say they are opposed to gays serving in the armed services.Also interviewed were local pays who said barring them from joining the military is discrimination.Both groups are in agreement on one score - they are unhappy about the way President Clinton has handled the gay/military issue.“It has been poorly thought out by the president,” said Robert Boatwright, vice commander of American Legion Frank C. Godfrey Post 12, Norwalk.Boatwright, who was an enlisted man in the army during the Korean War, scored the president for not spelling out policy before proposing lifting the gay ban.“Are gays going to have all the rights of married vets? Is the health program going to cover their mates? And will the government take care of them if they become aids victims.
