Walter and Iris Berguson and Bruce and Betty Berguson of Rich mond Township were named Out standing Cooperators of 1980 during the 6th Annual Tioga County Conser vation District Awards Banquet held ths past Saturday, January 31 at the First Presbyterian Church's Fellow ship Hall, Wellsboro, William Smith, Vice Chairman of the Conservation District's Board of Directors, presented two framed aerial photographs of their farm to the Bergusons. Walter and Bruce Berguson are in partnership owning a 135-cow, 120- heifer dairy farm consisting of 970 acres located on Route 660 between Richards Bridge and the Y Drive-in. In addition, the Bergusons also operate an additional 140 acres. With no previous experience in dairy farming, Walter Berguson, then a coal miner, purchased the main farm of 554 acres. In 1964, he pur chased an additional 416 acres. Con servation practices initiated on the land by the Bergusons include 12,000 feet of diversion, 720 feet of pipeline, 250 feet of tile line, four spring de velopments, two tank troughs and 650 feet of open drain. Director Roger Kantz introduced Frank Nichols and his wife, Julia of Fischler Street, Wellsboro. Named the 1980 Regional Maurice K God dard Award recipient, Frank has been a cooperator with the Conserva tion District since its beginning and served on the committee which or ganized the District. In 1950 he began planting trees on his own property, many of which were experimental, to see which species were compatible and how growth could be encour aged. Through intensive manage ment, he grew Christmas trees and is active in the Christmas tree business today. In 1955, he was certified as a tree farmer and presently has over 1,000 acres of woodland under man agement. Accomplishments in Conservation awards were also presented. Eagle Scout Jeff Erway received the award on behalf of himself and members of his Boy Scout Troop #106, Mansfield. Erway, 15, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Erway of Wellsboro, planned and carried out, with the help of his 8- member troop and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the planting of 2,250 tree seedlings in an area near Mansfield which will be part of the future recreation area. The troop also collected 16 bags of litter on a 4 mile stretch of highway. Wellsboro Cadette Troop 796 under the leadership of Bernice Superko also received a Conserva tion award. The troop collected all visible garbage near the Kelsey Creek dam, part of the Conservation District's Marsh Creek Watershed Project which won the National Watershed Congress Award in 1974. The Troop 796 girl scouts filled 12 garbage bags and several boxes with a variety of items such as beer cans, cigarette wrappers, diapers and Mc Donald's “Big Mac” and french fry containers. The Morris Runners +H Club, under the leadership of Roxanne At kinson were awarded an Accom plishments in Conservation Award for picking up trash along ten miles of Tioga County highway. The 10 members of the club collected 45 garbage bags of litter. Sonia McCutchan, the 10-year-old daughter of The Reverend and Mrs. Stephen McCutchan, of Wellsboro, was recognized as the 1980 Conserva tion Poster Contest Winner. She was a fifth grade student at Don Gill Ele mentary School, 1980 Senior High Conservation Essay winner James Enderie of Elk land High School, and 1980 Junior High Conservation Essay winner Marcia Bartlett of Wellsboro Junior High School were also recognized. Both Enderle and Bartlett received $50 bonds for being among the high school winners and then, for being selected the top Tioga County essay winners overall in their categories each received an additional $75 bond. The other school essay winners each receiving $50 bonds included: Senior High — Lynn Stewart of Wil lamson High School, Don Cobb of Wellsboro High School; Tom Jones of Mansfield High School and Brian Zerby of Cowanesque Vaisley High School; Junior High— Michele Walk er of Williamson, Ellen Wetmore of Elkland, Penny Griffin of Cowanes que Valley, and Robert Bowers of Canyon Christian Academy. Serving as Master of Ceremonies for the event was Conservation Board of Directors Chairman T. R. Besanceney, The Reverend Stephen McCuichan gave the invocation. Members of Boy Scout Troop #24 gave the pledge of allegiance, served the dinner, and their leader, Dennis Garner of Wellsboro, provided din ner music. Featured speaker for the event was Afton Schadel, Chief of the Division of Soil Resources and Erosion Con trol, Harrisburg. Door prizes were presented by Don Lindsey of the Tioga County Soi Con servation Service (SCS) office Pro viding the prizes were: Smith's Piano and Organs, Montgomery Implement Company, Confair Bottling Co., Can yon Implement, Dutch Pantry, Bene dict Ford Tractors, Nites Lumber Co., Green Leaf Fertilizer Co., dealer Raymond Butters, S's Dairy Store and Tioga Valley Milk Coop. Conservation District Directors are: Chairman Theodore Besan ceney, Vice Chairman William Smith. Directors — Keeth Butler, Earl Cass, Raymond Butters and Boger Kantz and Tioga County Com missioner Chairman Oliver R. Bart lett. AS FINALISTS IN the Bloseburg Kiwanis 1880 Annus Church Award Contest, Ann Lupkowski (left) and Suzanne Davies were each pre sented with a $50 US, Savings Bond at a supper meeting in their honor January 15. The contest is open to young men and young women who live in the operating area of the Blossburg Kiwanis.
