Many famous airplanes have been flight tested and produced at the facility, such as the Lockheed Constellation,Lockheed Electra, the Navy P2V, P3A, P38 and P80,The impact of Lockheed’s L-1011 program on the airport activity should not be too severe. However, thp increase in employment at the Lockheed-Califomia Co. is causing an increase in demands for convenient parking for employes.A spectacular increase in passenger traffic within the last two years has caused several changes to be made toaccommodate this increase of 31% in 1967 over 1966, and 45%The Terminal Bldg. housesfacilities normally found in any airport.Hollywood-Burbank Airportis a wholly-owned subsidiaryin 1968 over 1967. This has created the need for additional automobile parking spaces as most of the passenger traffic in and out of the airport is commuter type. Passengers leave their automobiles for a day or two while on a trip.Expansion Under WayIn July of 1967, a large aircraft hangar adjacent to the terminal area was relocatedto provide additional parkingspaces. A. Airport OpenedAfter the war, the citizens gave support to Los Angeles’ plans for a bond issue to develop its own municipal airport in the Inglewood area on grounds that the already large and rapidly growing population in the area needed more than one major airport. It was in December 1946, that the Los Angeles Municipal Airport was opened and the major airlines transferred nine-tenths of their flights to the newlv-opened I os Angeles Municipal Airport. Only United Air Lines and Western Air Lines retained flights at Burbank. In 1917, only 175,000 passengers arrived or departed from Lockheed Air Terminal. This low level of activityled many to believe that the airport would be lost to general air transportation. However, the year 1947 proved to be only the low point.Van Nuys (Calif.)—Tuesday, February 4, 1969*
