8-A The Anniston Star Thursday, February 4, 1960 LAFAYETTE, Ala.n(AP)— husky Negro has confessed to the rape-slaying of a middle-aged Sun day School teacher and the fatal bludgeoning of her father, Sheriff Ray Phillips reported. Jimmy Lee Robinson, 26, Mon day night admitted slaying the A.elderly white man and his spin ser daughter at their rural hon ‘near Fairfax Dec. 12, Phillips so ‘Wednesday. Young called Phillips’ state “premature” and said; Solution Is Doubted “From information at my di: , the crimes are not solven until I find out something I don't know at present.” He would not elaborate. Phillips said Robinson signed a statement that he killed Jefferson Chambers, 71, and his 43-year-old daughter, Nella Jean, in a rob bery that netted $3.50. Phillips said no charge had been filed against Robinson pend ing outcome of a lie detector test in Birmingham today. Such a test Wednesday indicated Robin son was telling the truth, he said. The sheriff said he believes an other person was involved and, the second lie detector test was set up in hopes of wringing more information from Robinson. Robinson denied any connection with the death of an earlier Ne gro suspect, Elijah Ramsey,whose body was found Jan. 16 in a creek near Fairfax a month after he disappeared, Phillips said. Second Man Eliminated Officers are investigating the possibility that someone murder ed Ramsey, but Phillips said he doesn’t believe Robinson was in volved and that the confession ap parently eliminates Ramsey from the case. Ramsey had been charged with Chambers’ death. The sheriff said Robinson re lated that after an evening of drinking at a tavern, a mile from the murder scene, he walked to the Chambers home three miles south of Fairfax off U.S. 29. He reached the house about 10 0 p.m. and entered through the un locked front door, carrying a knife, he said. While searching one room for money, he heard someone come in the kitchen door. Going to the kitchen, he en countered Chambers, whom he stabbed. Attack Is Related Miss Chambers was struck with an ax and offered scant resist ance as he pulled her out of a chair, put her on the bed and raped her, he quoted Robinson as saying. After cramming face tissue down the woman's throat and strangling her with her pajama pants, he replaced his victim in the chair where her half-nude body was found two days later. Robinson said he found $2 in Chambers’ wallet and $1.50 in the woman's purse, then drove her car to nearby Fairfax, parked it in a business section and went his way unnoticed. According to his story, Robin son threw the knife, ax, two wal lets and a dish towel into a creek. The sheriff said dragging operations Wednesday failed to produce them.
