Norwich. Feb. 2—Oscar M. Evans, one of the proprietors of the East Side Hotel, located about one mile east of this village, committed suicide by drinking carbolic acid about 4 o'clock Saturday afternoon and his dead body was found about a half hour later in the barroom, Coroner E. W. Wilcox of this vil lage was summoned and the body was brought to Lawrence’s undertaking rooms in this village, where a post mortem examination by Dre. T. F.F. Manley and P. B. Brooks showed that death had been caused by carbolic acid poisoning. The body will be taken on the O. W. 10:34 train to Middle where funeral services will be and burial will be made. Evans is survived by two brothers who reside in Middletown and is about 60 years of age. During the last few months the East Side Hotel has been conducted by Evans Carr, the latter partner being a woman, Jennie H. Carr, who came here from Middletown. On January 8, the grand jury in dicted the two proprietors of the “East Side” for conducting a disor derly house. The indictment was the result of a raid on the place the week before by District Attorney James P. Hill and Sheriff C. 8S. Holcomb, who found damaging evidence against the pair They pleaded not guilty to the indictment and were released on §1, 000 bail. Since then a private detective has been at work at the “East Side” se curing evidence for the conviction of the proprietors of the place, Evans feared that his conviction was certain and became despondent, finally tak ing his life.
