° Beets A Profitable Crop James Doolittle, left, of Wolsey, and John Ruff of Miller are two of the area farmers that have found sugar beets to be a profitable crop. Beets were raised on test plots in the area in 1960 and in 1961 the first full crop of beets were grown by farmers in Spink, Sanborn, Beadle and Hand counties. U and I Sugar Company officials and local agriculture leaders expect 3,400 acres of beets to be raised this year and by 1965 — if Eastern South Dakota gets the acreage allotment for a new sugar plant — it is antici pated that the acreage in this the Huron area will exceed RA arrea VyvvY @Vewe (Plainsman Photo)
