OBITUARYSarah LusetU Lewis, 80Sarah Lusetta Lewis. the daughter of Solomon and Catherine Wyland, was born near Harlan, Iowa, March 29, 1072,and passed away at her home in Harlan January 19, 1953, at the age of 00 years, 9 months and 20 days. Her early life was spent in and around Bowman’s Grove, east of Harlan, where her parents farmed.On July 3, 1890, she was united in marriage to Frank Lewis, who originally came from Kentucky and who had located in the vicinity of Harlan. To this union were born seven children of whom three now survive. They are Blanche Eigler, Gladys Schell and Gerald Lewis.Their early married life was spent on the parental farm east of Harlan. Later, in March, 1903, they moved to their newly purchased farm near Defiance where Mr. Lewis passed away on July 7, 1917. Mrs. Lewis and the children continued to live on the •'farm until 1920 at which time they moved to the present home in Harlan where she resided until her death.Mrs. Lewis was always very active in the life of the Church, belonging to the . Methodist Church in Defiance and later, in Harlan, where she continued to be active as long as health permitted. She was a Charter Member of the Order of the Eastern Star at Defiance, later transferring her membership to Harlan.She also held active membership in the Women’s Union and the Lusetta Birthday Club. She always expressed a very friendly attitude to acquaintances, both young and old, taking a great deal of pride in being hospitable and neighborly.Besides her parents and her husband, Mrs. Lewis was preceded in death by four sons: Maurice on April 7, 191(5; Ralph on October 1, 1916: Dale onMarch 5, 1918, Ray on October 13, 1930; and also two sisters and two brothers. In addition to her immediate family, a grandson, 1st Lt. Maurice Eigler, lost his life while serving in the Air Corps during the Second World War.Additional survivors include three grandchildren, Maurine, Gerald and Randeli; and one great grandchild, Maurice.Funeral services were. held Friday afternoon at the Pauley funeral home with the Rev.
