In non-conference action, the WTC Westerners walked over the McMurry JV unit, 87-54, in Abilene Saturday. The Green Tides move to Hobbs, New Mexico tonight to challenge New Mexico Junior College. Lawrence Butler was high point with 34 as WT led 41-26 at intermission. Butler left the game with 10 minutes remaining in the contest. Darryl Smith was second scorer with 16. Larry Orton and Stanley Covington hit in the double figures with 13 and 10, respectively. NMJC, 2-8 in conference, could turn out to be a wolf in sheep's clothing. Losing four to six games by three points or less, New Mexico is capable of adding a fourth loss for the Westerners. A well-balanced squad, NM has had approximately 10 players score in every game. In the initial tilt between the clubs at the coliseum, the Westerners took a 73-70 win. “We were behind the entire game,” said WTC Coach Mike Mitchell. ‘‘It wasn’t until the last few minutes that we pulled away and won. ‘ Ron Doyle is NMJC’s top sharpshooter. Standing at 6-3, Doyle is noted for his leaping ability as well as his hot hands. Junior Hutchins is another threat. Small for a roundballer at 5-7, Hutchins scored 20 points against Frank Phillips and Amarillo College last week. “It’s hard to defense or just plan for this team,’ commented Mitchell. ‘They play 10 men about equal time. Most score seven or eight points a game.”’ “Some six or seven are capable of pumping in 15 or 20 points.” Though a small team, New Mexico moves very quickly. WTC tried a man-to-man defense last time, but found themselves doing more chasing than anything else. Injured Tyrone Clopton is not expected to play this game but will if it is felt he is needed. Walter Benjamin has seen little action these past weeks. Harrison Johnson suited out against McMurry but did not play. Chris Tisdale and Butch Person have been filling in for Clapton. According to Mitchell, both have done a good job. Scoring ace Butler has received his share of ego building. ‘Lawrence has been unbelievable since Christmas,” the WT mentor said. ‘‘His defense needs some improving, but he’s coming along.” “T hate a game like this. We have nothing to gain and everything to lose,” said Mit chell.
