D., Tuesday, January 81,1899, of a complication of lugrlppe and nsthtrta, Mary Elisabeth,_ wife of David Smith, aged 65 years, eight months and twenty days.Died.While it Was well known that her illness wub a severe one, it-was little thought that the gates of the great beyond would so soon be opened for the refuge of the world-weary soul. ' As she had lived, she died—calmly and peacefully. Patiently, hopefully and cheerfully Bhe bore the burdens nnd ■endured the vicissitudes of this life, j»nd surely her Maker has said: “Well •done, good and /aithful servant, enter thou Into the joys of heaven.”The stranger and wayfarer at the liome over which she presided was at nil times warmly welcomed and made to feel that his lines had indeed fallen into pleasant places, and the writer of theseTlnes, in the'1 hour of sorrow and4 .sore distress, has felt about him that care and kindness which could not have been exceeded even by a mother.Mary Elizabeth Hartley was born, May 11, 1833, near Mercy, Mercy county, Penn. Her father, John C. Hartley, died about thirty years ago, and her mother, Mrs. Susanna Finley Hartley, dying at Ainsworth, Neb., in 1892, To them were born thirteen children, of whom three daughters and two sons are dead, the survivors being Mrs. S. J» Allen of Springfield, S. D.; Mrs. Hannah Gray, of Ainsworth, Neb.; Mrs. Martha Polen, of Valentine, Neb.; Mrs. Esther Allen, of Wilbur, Idado; Mrs. Emma Griffith, of Oregon; Wesley Hartley, of Nashville, Tenn.; Joseph H., of Richland, Ore.; and* • 9Joshua, of Coppinger Mills, Mo.Deceased was married to David Smith at Burlington, Wis., in 1851. Fourteen children were the fruits of their union, seven of whom are dead, foilr being buried at Burlington, Wis., and three In the Akron cemetery. Besides the aged husband, the surviving children are Mrs. Hattie Corey, of Baker City, Ore.; Moses W„ of Akron; William D., of LaGrande, Ore.; Mrs. 0. A. Jones, of Beresford, S.
