The News of the Day Told in Brief Personals, Etc. Everybody is talking hypno tism. Carlos Helms, of Montgomery, is in town. Read Mr. Keefer’s new cont ad, in today's paper. February came in with clear skies and a bracing atmosphere. The council proceedings, and they are interesting, will be found elsewhere. The young folks will soon be discussing St. Valentine's day and its observance. The old set of town officials looked happy yesterday. ‘They had all‘got there.’’ The ninth race Friday afternoon at the race track will afford a great deal of amusement. We were glad to see ‘'Billy’’ Jones, of Boston, in town yester day. He is one of nature's noble men. Attention is called to the new ad of Capt Hicks, which appears on the third page of today's pa per. Mr. Leander Ba and Mies Clara G. Baal, of New York, were among yesterday's arrivals at the Mitch ell House. That is a fine programme of ra ces arranged for the matinee Fri day afternoon. The races will be gin at 2 o'clock. Mr. and Mrs. Lake, who have been visiting relatives in this city, returned to their home in Black shear yesterday afternoon. It is to be hoped that we will have cold enough to check the rise of sap in the fruit trees, otherwise the chances for fruit this year will be slim. Dr. Blackshear will move in his new office on the east side of Broad Street today. And Dr. Taylor will follow in a few days in the same building. Lee failed to put Judge Bibb under hypnotic influence on Mon day night. But the Judge came near succumbing to some similar influence at the Waycross fair. In this instance there was a lady in the vase. We want everybody to keep in mind the 23rd day of this month. On the evening of that day Gov ernor Saylor, of Tennessee, will charm, as few men can, an audi ence in the opera house. Bob Taylor, and the “Fiddle and the Bow ’ this famous lecture, are household words all over tide land. Speaking of hypnotism, we know a young man who has been completely hypnotized by a young lady in town. If she were to tell him that white was black, he would unhesitatingly believe it. He is under the influence of the charmer pretty much all the time. And he fairly bugs the chains which bind him. The Levy Mercantile establish ment was the centre of attraction yesterday. Crowds gathered there early in the morning to see the van in the big show window, who was hypnotized at the opera house on Monday night. And all day long a stream of people, white and colored, passed along, every one stopping to take a look at the un conscious sleeper. A very enjoyable “Candy Par ty’? was given by Mrs. Lessie Mc Dougald and Miss Gussie Carroll at their home on Warren street on Monday evening. Vocal and in strumental music and games made the evening pass quickly and pleasantly and a thoroughly good time was enjoyed by all. Among those present were, Miss May Hartshorn, of Penn., Messrs. P. J. Carroll, P. H. Dacey and A. E. McNamara, of Mags., Mr. Neal Bowman, of South Carolina and Jas. Bevan, of Tampa, Fla. Oth ers present were Mr. and Mrs. Grant, Misses Bessie Vanu, Cora Hagood, Lizzie Carroll, Mamie Parker, Araminta Culpepper, and Mesers. Fred Grant, Amos Harris and Walter Williams.
