HUBBARD — The Girls’ Basketball Team at Hub bard High School has finished out its season with three class stand-outs. LADY EAGLE STANDOUT Junior class student at Hubbard High School Cara Hendrix is a five foot, eleven inch senior center for the Lady Eagles who has been averaging nearly 18 p.p.g. including a spectacular 41-point per formance on December 15 at the Hubard Gymnasium. Hendrix will have the op portunity to go past the scoring record set by Brenda McNichol last year due to the fact that she is still a junior and has one more year with the cagers. She made regional com petition in track last year as a sophmore in the 800 meter run as well. Seniors Stacie Gontaruk and Lisa Abrutz have ac complished a large amount of tasks throughout their four years at Hubbard High School and both admit their “toughest” strengths are in the defense. While Lisa stresses her need to improve her shooting technique, Stacie feels her weakest point was in the rebounding. Active in sports, both ladies excell in softball as well and Lisa is a runner who in the past year advanced to the regionals in Cross Country. While Lisa has not made definite plans to pursue her basketball career in college, Stacie said she plans to continue with the sport while attending the university. Another Lady Eagle stand out is Cara Hendrix, a 5 foot 11 inch senior center for the lady cagers who has been averaging nearly 18 p.p.g. including a spectacular 41 point performance on December 15 at the Hub bard Gymnasia. She follows in the footsteps of another blue-chipper in Lori Ferrence who achieved all-state status as center for the Eagles two years ago, according to Jeffrey Dunn, high school sports writer. Hendry was able to make it to the regional competition in track last year as a sophmore in the 800 meter run. She plays an integral part in the girls’ relays and also in the 100 yard dash, halftime lead. The third period was the turning point of the game as the locals outscored the Hornets 15-2 in a 5:32 stretch to take a 31-23 lead with 3:03 left. The period came to a close with the Lady Eagles in front by a 35-27 lead. The fourth period was the most crucial period of the contest as the locals saw a twelve point lead, diminish into a two point lead 47-45 with 1:30 left in the game. After a Hickory timeout, a jump ball was called at center floor. The Lady Eagles controlled the tip and Cara Hendrix found range from five feet away for the hoop, to put the Eagles in front by four 49-45. A foul on the play enabled Hendrix to complete a three point play with :44 remaining. Two insurance free throws by Lisa Abrutz with :19 and :7 left put the Lady Eagles in the win column once again. Cara Hendrix collected 23 markers, while Stacie Gontaruk connected on 14. Jennie Currie added 6 while Abrutz collected four. Donna Diegan and Alice Habuda paced Hickory with 12 points. The Lady Eagles will return to action tomorrow night when they face Youn gstown East. SENIOR STAND-OUTS — Two members of the senior class at Hubbard High School have taken special recognition with the Lady Eagles Basketball Team this year. Lisa Abrutz, left and Stacie Gontaruk will be leaving brilliant basketball careers in the annals of the high school. In addition to basketball highlights, the girls also excel in softball and Abrutz is a runner advancing to the regionals in cross country this past year.
