Perkins is preparing to put up a grist mill on Howards Creek.Solicitor Spainhour seemed to enjoy the snow very much as he put in the most of Tuesday sleigh-riding.Rev. A. H. Gentry will fill his regular appointment at the Methodist Church in our town on next Sunday at 11 a. m.Deputy Collector R. L. Councill and Deputy Marshals N. N. Colvara and J. C. McGhee are on a trip to Cut Laurel Gap looking after the interests of Uncle Sam.Reports say that a steam saw mill will be put to work at Wallace Ed-misten’s on New River as soon as the weather gets better so as to move the mill from Johns River.We hear it rumored, and we hope it is true, that Sheriff Calloway will move to our town soon so that his children may have advantage of the school which will open its first session here on next Monday.David E. Bower, who lived in Caldwell County and the father of Hon. W. H. Bower died on the 27th inst. at his home. Mr. Bower had been illfor a long time and was little past 81 years of age. He was buried on Tuesday near Elkville. Hon. W. H. Bower is attending the funeral of his father.The tolls have been so changed on the Boone and Blowing Rock turnpike as to allow a one, two or three horse wagon or buggy a return ticket for 5 cents in addition to one regular fare and four, five and six-horse wagons for 10 cents in addition to one fare. All persons wishing to make arrangements to work out their toll can do so by applying to J. F. Spain-hour, President.Senator Jeter C. Pritchard was sworn in as Senator and entered upon his duties as such on the 24th.Josephus Daniels, chief clerk of the Interior Department, has resigned and will return to Raleigh to take charge of his paper, The News and Observer. Captain Arthur Barnes, Senator Ransom’s private secretary, will succeed Mr. Daniels.Cotton mills are coming south from New England. This is disturbing some of the northern newspapers, who are trying to persuade the mill owners to halt.
