1966 was a year of Transition in Waco. The new year 1967 is expected to witness the complete recovery from the loss of the James Connally Air Force base as a training center and the possible moving of the 12th A. F. Headquarters to Bergstrom Base in Austin. Connally Technical Institute and Community Junior College are fast developing to gradually replace the losses sustained. Highway constructions have played a big part in the economy of Central Texas. More is to come during this year 1967, it is reported. New Industries have been on a move toward helping to boost the payrolls in Waco while enlargement programs are going on in those institutions which have been in Waco for some time. The biggest thing happening in Texas during the year was the A. O.. Smith bombing plant operations in Bellmead with promise of more production as well as additional manufactured items anticipated by that big institution, General Tire, Owens-Illinois factories and others are spreading out. Recovery growth started during 1966 is expected to stabilize the economy of cen tral Texas during this new year. The big event for the year as far as publicity is concerned, was the Baylor-Syracuse nationally televised football game which the Bears walked away with. This has to be the BIG STORY of the year. The Success Open Pro-Am golf tourney as well as the Miss Texas beauty pageant were other noticeable events of the year. Still other things appealed to the public as most outstanding. All and all it was a good year in Waco and for Greater Waco, as well as Central Texas. The Citizen files reveal these headlines: JANUARY... Captain W. A.
