The town of Alameda was in corporated in 1854 and became city in 1872. One of the vital economic fac tors supporting the business and commerce of the area is the tre mendous U. S. Naval Air Station, developed on filled land. It faces the Pacific Ocean from the wes terly tip of the city. Dedicated in 1941, the huge military reserva tion played a key role in World War II and today brings the buying power of a $50,000,000 an nual payroll into the region. Alameda is a few minutes’ driving distance from the hub of cosmopolitan San Francisco and its Eastbay neighbor, Oakland. An underwater tube and five bridges’ link the city to the main land and major highways. At the last official census in 1054, Ala meda’s population was more than 70,000. Present expansion and de velopment plans are expected to attract an additional 6000 in the next few years. The city encom passes 25 square miles, 77 miles of streets, and is at an average elevation of 15.5 feet above sea level. Alameda, California, is affectionately termed the ‘‘Isle of Pleasant Living’ by its inhabitants. It emerged from territory once part of a huge grant from the King of Spain to Luis Peralta. When Peralta claimed the land 150 years ago, it was a peninsula covered with giant oaks and abundant with wildlife. Man and time reshaped its boundaries, until one day a tidal canal (or estuary) severed the part that was to become Alameda from the mainland in order to provide for inner-harbor facilities. An island was created, and is now a thriving city—a distinctly separate community with many fine poten tialities.
