CLEVELAND?—In a Parisian setting, Cleveland socialites danc ed, drank champagne and dined al most until dawn today at the elab orate coming-out party for pretty Betty Palmer, 18. The entire messagine and the ballroom at Hotel Statler had been rented for the affair, and nearly 800 jeweled and furred women and men in dress clothes came. Decorations included a replica of the base of the Eiffel Tower and a 50-foot mural of the River Seine, painted on the ballroom foyer wall just for the party. Though it was obviously an ex pensive arrangement, Miss Palm er’s father, A. Gurnee Gallien, said a newspaper report estimating the cost at $50,000 was “‘grossly exag gerated.” The guest list was carefully screened. No one got in unless it was made certain his name was there. The mezzanine was cur tained throughout,to block off the view of curious people in the lobby. In addition, nine private detec tives — also dressed in dinner clothes—moved through the crowd, alert for gate crashers or thieves. The Galliens live in suburban Shaker Heights, but also have homes at Blue Hills, Me., and Thomasville, Ga. Mrs. Gallien, the former Jean Hanna, was the widow of William Pendleton Palmer, Jr., whose fath er was president of the American Steel Wire Co.
