.LOSTION GLACIERFred Young Died From ' Injuries, While Ira B. Hurd, of Valdez,Had Narrow EscapeRecent arrivals from Cordova tell of the death of Frank Young, Shu-shanna miner, and the narrow escape of Ira B. Hurd, whose family now resides in Valdez.It appears that Young, and another man, whose name is unknown, attempted to cross the glacier after nightfall, believing they could follow the trail by the meagre moonlight Young slipped into a crevasse and his partner was searching for him when Ira B. Hurd arrived on the scene on his way to Shushanna.Hurd joined in the search for the the missing man, as Young’s companion was not sure into which crevasse he had fallen. They had no light and Hurd fell into a crevasse 20 feet deep but fortunately suffered no broken bones and was able to crawl out. Fearing to continue search in the darkness the men lay down in their robes to await the coming of sufficient light to avoid the crevasses.Early next morning they found Young in a semi-unconscious condition alongside of the crevasse, from which he had succeeded in crawling. He had been badly broken up and died on the trail while the men were trying to get him to McCarthy.
