Hundreds of Employes Lose1 heir Jobs.IMPORTING WHEELS FROM tURCPEMonday Will Bo General ContributionThroughout the South for Jeffenion OtTto' MoDvtMot-Traoble Duo la Long J«l*nd City Muudny.* Bockford, 111., Dec. 31.—There is mare or lets mourning here today over the fact that several tcore employees of the Bockford Watch company find their occupation gone through thedecision of the corporation to discon*tinue the making of balance wheels, and to import hereafter this part of the watch from Switzerland. It is claimed that this portion of the watch can be manufactured in and purchased from Switzerland, the duty and freight thereon paid, and the mechanism complete received in this city, for a total of nine cents per wheel, whereas on an American scale of wages it costa seventeen cants to produce each andevery wheel put into a Rockford wa’ch. It is claimed by the operatives that the action of the corporation in patronizing foreign works to the exclusion of American labor is unfair and unjust, especially in view of the fact that this branch of industry has been so protected by legislation that aforeign watch complete in its mechanism cannot be brought into this country for less than its cost abroad. The corporation, however, not satisfiedwith the protection thus afforded has been casting around for ways aDd means of demioiahing the cost of itsdnisbed product through the foreignlabor market, and the word has already gone out that other portions of thefinished product coming from the centers of the pauper labor of Earope are now being sought for, and that if the compaoy is successtni in its quest several hundred additional employees will be compelled to quit.
