Curley was fined in two cases $1,200 and costs; J. F.* *Hahnen, W. J. Harris and D. Lehane were each fined $600 and costs. The court in passing sentence npon the saloon keepers, said substantially as follows:“You, the sheriff and the court, for the last four years have been running a race; you have been fined, and still you kept on in your nefarious traffic. Yonder nits a man that I have just sentenced to the penitentiary eight year* for a crime where no life was taken; yc*t by statistics kept it is shown that by thetrade you follow, 80, ~ 000 human beings eycry year are sent to premature graves, or linger along dying by inches. Now I intend that my skirts shall be clear of the blood of men killed by your traffic, and that when I am called to judgment I shall not be judged a partieep* criminis in your crimes. This is plain talk, and ^wish it to be so. I shall deal roughly with you, that you may not continue to murder the people. I shall com* mit you to the custody of the sheriff to see that the demands of the law are satisfied. Is the sheriff here? I wish him to listen to what I say.”Mr. Van Slyck came forward and took a seat at the bar.The Court—Mr. Curly, how often have you been fined?Mr. Curly—Four times.The Court—I fine you $1,200 and costs in these two cases, and you must pay or work it out on the streets. You are now in the sheriffs hands.The court—J. F. Hahnen, how often have you been tried for this offense?Hahnen—Twice, and fined once. I quit selling a year.The Court—Your fine was $40 before,I don’t like to be trifled with. You said you would never sell again. I fine you now $600 and costs*W, J.
