‘Continued from Page One) Old age finally caught up with the many elementary schools that were scattered throughout the county. At the end of the 1977-78 school year they closed for good, paving the way for the opening of the new North and South Decatur elementary schools in September. The county school corporation was also honored when one of its teachers, Bob Ciscell, South Decatur Junior-Senior High School art teacher, was named Indiana Teacher of the Year in December. The city school system completed another smooth-running year under the direction of superintendent Dr. Joe Foust. The school board did make history when it elected Mrs. Jere Sturges to the presidency of the board, the first woman in history to be so honored. The most baffling news of the year was the murder of a quiet couple, Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Shasteen, R. R. 2, Westport, at their home near Scipio. After weeks of investigation, police arrested a young man and woman in Arkansas and charged them with the brutal slaying. Lyndale Ivy, formerly of Columbus, pleaded guilty to the crime and his alleged cohort, Teresa West, faces prosecution. A South Decatur junior, Greg Bradshaw, surprised the Decatur County sports world in 1978 with a sensational rushing season on the gridiron for the Cougars in the biggest athletic story of the year. Bradshaw gained over 2,000 yards in a sensational cam paign in which Dan Mollaun’s Cougars established their best ever season mark, 8-2. For his accomplishments, the quiet youngster was awarded a “‘first-of-its-kind” trophy as the Greensburg Daily News Football Player of the Year. Rushville invaded the county in the Greensburg basketball sectional and the Lions dethroned the local Pirates as sec tional champions. North Decatur’s Chargers of Dan Jordan enjoyed the most success of any recent North boys’ team, as the cagers captured a Triton Central Holiday Tournament championship trophy. In the ‘‘minor”’ sports, Greensburg’s tennis team claimed a regional title and Pirate wrestlers were in semi-state com petition. Led by Terri Kanouse, Barb Hoeing and Marcia Miller, girls’ sports at North Decatur flourished and included Big Blue River Conference championships in volleyball and basketball. South Decatur’s Lynn Adams went to the state championship girls’ track meet in the softball throw com petition. Greensburg’s major league pitcher, Dyar Miller, a reliever for the California Angels, enjoyed an outstanding campaign with a 7-2 record. He was in the national spotlight several times, including during the death by murder of superstar teammate, Lyman Bostock. ‘“‘Alums”’ made good also as former Pirate football record setter Tom Barr saw playing time as a freshman for Pur due’s Boilermakers and Terri Kanouse started for the University of Nebraska volleyball team. Toward the end of the year, North Decatur officials an nounced an unexpected move of their athestic program from the Big Blue River Conference to the Mid-Hoosier Conference of which county foe South Decatur is a member.
