Bob Krueger Saturday morning a few weeks ago, farmers drove tractors, corn pickers, ferti lizer spreaders and pick-ups down Independence Ave nue, around the Capitol and past where I work. You could sense, not just by talking to the farmers, but by looking at their faces as they steered mammoth equipment through freezing weather, that these were men determined to be heard. The message they deli vered was more than one of warning that they, as the Americans who dig and plant and reap our food, are people whose problems need to be taken seriously. As one farmer put it, “They just can’t imagine the kind of variety of skills we have... what we have to know about fertilizer ma chines, crops, economics, decision-making.” As a person familiar with farming and ranching, I can vouch for that. People who don’t farm can have hard time visualizing the work a farm requires. A real danger is that Washington bureaucrats re move themselves from these concerns and do not bother to learn the ins and outs of many men’s work. As a congressman, I have a special obligation to stay attuned to the needs of all people, no matter what they do for a living. I am particularly con cerned about a problem now facing some of the farmers in Texas who store their wheat in grain elevators. Although most elevator operators are honest, in some cases they have not The B balanced their books and bankruptcies have occurred. These operators are required to bond their elevators but the bondsmen cover only what the elevator is worth, not the grain stored within. The result is economic tragedy for the farmers who lose their grain. This is just an example of how farmers can lose money. Steps must be taken so that in the future farmers will be safe in relying on the grain elevators where they store crops. Cattle Feeding Picture Better The cattle feeding picture is bright, some what due to an eaten fed cattle market and declining grain prices, says a livestock marketing specialist with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service. Thus, cow-calf producers might want as consider ae their calves or yearlings year. However, they need to remember to carefully price the feeders at current prices, instead of at their actual cost. Due to reduced calf supplies, producers will likely be paying higher prices for light-weight feed ers. USDA has announced that the support price for 1977 marketings of shorn wool will be 99 cents per and $1.498 per pound for mohair. Support prices for 1978 marketings will be er oe yeas for shorn wool an 647 per pound for mohair. Forty-three million bush els of wheat, which is about 25 percent of the amount eligible, has been placed in the extended long-term reseal program (grain re serve program), to the Texas Farm Bureau. Due to the improvement in prices, more than half of the maturing wheat loans have been redeemed. There are about 300 million bushels of 1976 crop wheat still in the loan.
