Hiram R. Wells, 81 years old, father of County Treasurer A. Wells, died Dec. 28 at his home in Coal City following a lengthy illness of dropsy. He was born near Coschocton, On April 10, 1839. He was married, Feb. 13, 1859, to Susanna Smith and to this union were born five sons and four daughters. ‘Two daugh ters, oldest of the children, died in early childhood. In the Civil War he enlisted, Aug. 28, 1862, in Co. H. 97 Ind. Inf., and was discharged June 9, 1865. He participated in several of the major engagements of the war, Mission Ridge, Knoxville, Resaca, Kenesaw Mountain, New elope, siege of Atlanta and was with Sherman in his march across Georgia. Mr. Wells is survived by the widow, seven children, 47 grand children, nine great grandchil dren, a brother, Harvey, of Wor thington, and a sister, Mrs. Ma lona Bond, of Coal City. The children are: John A., Mrs. Sarah, E. Fiscus, Morton H. and Will iam P. all of this county, James M. of Rock Rapids, In., Jacob P. of Steen, Minn., and Mrs. Mary E. Griffith of Chrisman, III. Funeral services were held at the home Friday. Elder D. H. Reagan in charge, and interment ,was made in Fiscus cemetery.
