Radio format still up in airBy KRISTAN KELLYStaff WriterWhether 2 Live Crew or Barry Manilow will be played on Q101.1 airwaves after its sale to the owner of KIAK radio is yet to be determined. The Federal CommunicationsCommission approved the sale ofQ101.1 to COMCO Broadcasting Dec. 17. The sale is expected to be finalized in February.Currently Q 101.1 plays soft rock. COMCO company KIAK-FM has a country-western format. The KIAK AM station broadcasts mostly sports shows.COMCO also owns two FM andone AM radio stations in Anchorage. COMCO President Gary Don novan said it is too premature to decide if the format of Q101.1 will bechanged.“I think we will spend some time doing some research and looking at the market. I don’t see any segment in the population of Fairbanks being dramatically underserved. Just about everything is being done and being done really well,” Don no van said.Only some minor adjustments will be needed, he said.“Obviously, the station has had some success doing what it is,” Donnovan said. “We can make it significantly better than it was.”Also unknown is how many of the 10 station employees will be terminated.“Part of the attraction is the economy of scale of being able to operate more with less. Certainly we don’t need two receptionist and two general managers,” Donnovan said.“How many exact people we will end up needing, I don’t know at thistime. Initially everyone is staying,” he said.Q101.1 will move into the same building as the KIAK stations in February. Q101.1 leased the building it used on Industrial Avenue. COMCO will use the station’s transmitter site.
