Augusta tops Neillsville, Cornell wins Independence AUGUSTA — Augusta's Beavers rolled to an 80-40 win over Neillsville Friday night and will play Cornell for the championship of the Augusta boys holiday basketball tournament tonight at 9 p.m Cornell (7-0) won a 71-64 over time duel from Independence (4-3) in the other first round game. Augusta will take a 6-1 record against Cornell. Independence and Neillsville (2-4) will play for third place tonight at 7 p.m. Augusta, with four players scor ing in double figures, shot to a 26-5 lead in the first quarter and kept the margin near 30 points the rest of the game. Cornell led Independence most of the way but the Indees came from 12 points behind in the last quarter to gain a four-point margin, only to have the Chiefs rally to tie at 61-61 and force the game into overtime. Independence lost top-scorer Chaz Pronschinske on fouls at the end of regulation play and Cornell took charge in the 10-3 overtime session. The Raiders now face Elena Strum, a 73-49 winner over Alma, for the championship. The Rails (4-3) saw their 14- point lead disappear in a hurry as Arcadia (6-1) outscored them 27-15 in the second quarter. In the fourth quarter, Altoona shaved the Raiders’ lead to one on a couple occasions but it could never get the lead. Two Arcadia free throws with six seconds left put the game away. Matt Boettcher scored 24 points and Darin Zank added 19 for Al toona while Brent Koslo led the Raiders with 17. Despite getting 22 points from Tracy Denk and 19 from Jason Fetting 19, the Rivermen (4-3) couldn't stop the Cardinals (1-6) from gaining their first triumph of the year.
