Application of Elmer L. Dewey, con victed slayer of J. Henry Johnston, late sergeant of police of Salt Lake, for parole was denied yesterday by the state board of pardons at its meeting held at the state prison. The meeting was the last the pres ent board will hold, as a new board will take charge of the work at the next regular meeting on the third Sat urday in January. The old board made an effort to clear up its calen dar as far as possible. As a result, sixty-eight cases were heard and the re was in session until late last night. Dewey Petition Opposed. The application of Dewey for parole has been pending before the board for months, but has been continued from time to time. Strong efforts have been put forth to have him re leased and strong opposition to it has been put up by members of the po lice force and other officers. The board, after mature deliberation yes terday, decided to deny the parole. Dewey was convicted of murder in the second degree and sentenced on November 27, 1911, to fourteen years in the state prison for shooting and killing Sergeant Johnston while in a drunken fit of jealousy and rage, fol lowing a quarrel with his wife, Min nie Dewey, in the Albert hotel. Dewey shot Sergeant Johnston while the of ficer was trying to quiet him and protect his wife from threats of vio lence at the hands of her husband. The board was more generous to Thomas Vance, convicted of assault with intent to commit murder and sentenced from Salt Lake county to twenty years in prison. It commuted his sentence to eighteen years. A commutation from life imprison ment to twenty-five years was also granted to Robert Zaffey, convicted of murder in the first degree in Carbon county. A rehearing of his application for commutation of sentence was also granted John Zoris, convicted of murder in Carbon county. Cases Acted Upon. The names of those whose cases were acted upon, the offense charged, the clemency sought and the action taken were as follows: Victor A. McCroskey, grand lar ceny, parole, terminated January 15; Milo Atwood, bad checks, commuted to December 28; James Burke, mur der, second degree, pardon, denied; W DPD, Dagus, grand larceny, pardon, sentence terminated January 2; Jack Stevens, robbery, pardon, denied; Frank Horsley, Jr., grand larceny, pardon, continued to March meeting; Richard A. Baker, robbery, pardon, denied; Arthur Rowley, robbery, par don, denied; Albert Albertson, as sault with deadly weapon, pardon, de nied; Jasper Eves, grand larceny, pardon, sentence terminated; Sam Kirkpatrick, murder, second degree, pardon, denied; Thomas G.
