W. 'Catharine, master of the steamer ' Chattanooga,* makes the following statement:About 2:80 p. m., December 26, fifteen miles north of winter quarter lightship, I sighted a three-masted schooner under base reefed main and xnizzen sails, with the ensign union down. I bore atray for her and the vessel reported, that they had sprung a leak and the crew wished to be taken off. They said their boat was stove.I then placed the steamer in such a position as to shelter the schooner as anuch as possible and lowered a boat in charge of the second officer. The boat returned in about an hour, failing to rescue the schooner's crew, 'because of the high sea which prevented it gettiog alongside. The second officer had received injuries in the boat which made it impossible for him again to attempt the ^rescue. Another boat’s crew volunteers! to make a necond attempt. They were supplied with life bouys and lines, and, after several attempts, ■succeeded in getting a life bnoy on the schooner. The first mate of the ■schooner secured himself to the buoy, Jumped ovprboard and was pioked up by the life boat. Life buoys were now 'broken and useless ha it was impossible to get very near the schooner on . account of the severe gale and high •sea, and as night was setting in with rain and sleet ana increasing tfinds, which was drifting the ship into shallow water. I was compelled for the safty of my own vessel, passengers and crew, to abandon the schooner, and was forced, very reluctantly, to put my ship to sea. The name of the ill-fated schooner was Ario Pardee. She was loaded with cement for Philadelphia. The schooner and the remainder of the crew (four men) were probably lost.Captain Park, of the ship Alert burned at sea, November fourteenth, arrived to-day as a passenger on the steamer Maranhuese. The Alert sailed froth New York, October 25, for Shanghai, with a cargo of 400,000 cases of oil and a crew of eighteen persons, besides the captain’s wife and children. The morning of November 14, in latitude 8.40 N., longitude 20.10 W., the ■trade winds were lost and heavy threatening weather prevailed. At 10 a. m. rainfell in torrents, accompanied by vivid flashes of lightning, which struck the fore royal mast, carrying it away and cutting some pf the running gear, and taking a large piece dut of the ffore royal. The shock felled men to the deck. At 1:30 a. m. smoke was : seen coming from the fore-hatoh. The captain ordered ' the hatches caulked down, which i was done in part, when they were blown off by an explosion, which threw 1 the men to each side of the ship. Clouds of smoke tilled the air and flames were seen near the, hatch. All parts of the ship were soon enveloped in smoke. I ordered the boats cleared lt;away and prepared to leave the ship. * At 11:30 we wore all in the threo boats, lt;’with SQine clot'hing and provisions, j and Sodfi after our leaving, the ship : was ablaze. At dark wo made the : 'boats fast astern each other and lay by i the burning ship, hoping some passing vessel would bo attracted by the light and come to our rescue. Next morning they were all rescued by , the steamer Compt. rt Eu, from Havre, . ■for Pernambuco. Not being able to J lt;speak or understand French, whilo the 1 others did not understand English, we .t tvere.mado to perceive by their actions i that we could help ourselves to any- lt;'thing we could find for our comfort. i
