NAACP HAS USED 1/4 MILLION FOR BAIL IN THE SOUTHNEW YORK - The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People has placed more than a quarter of a million dollars for bill for civil rights demonstrators in 11 citiesin seven southern. state, Roy Wilkins, executive secretary, revealed.A total of $268,570 of the Association's funds, as of Nov. 30, was tied up in bail bondsin areas where local resources were ex-hausted and where the authorities refused to accept property bonds, ^demanding ~ cash. The money is returnable upon finalsettlement of the cases.More than half of the sum, $$154,175 was allocated for Jackson, Miss., where more than 900persons were arrested in last summer's demonstrations.Additional NAACP funds were made available for bail bonds in Biloxi and Clarksdale, Miss.; Albany and Columbus, Ba.; Baton Rouge and Shreveport, Ls.; Charleston, S.C.: Memphis, Tenn.;St.Agustine, Fla.; and Dorchester,Md.The sums advanced by the NAACP are in addition to money raised locally for bail bonds.A recent Department of Justice survey indicated a total of more than 1,800 civil rights demonstrations in 40 states and theDistrict of Columbia, between May 20 and the end of October. Some 10,000 persons were arrested for participation in suchdemonstrations during the year.
