William Grabe Says He Got List Of Defective Flues From Fire Chief; Just Asking For Work. Denial that he represented him self as a city employe or a city chimney inspector was William Grabe’s answer to Chief of Police W. C. Benesh’s warning against un authorized chimney inspectors in Saturday’s Gazette and Republican. Grabe, who lives at 110 Fourth avenue southwest, liced on city stationery, a list of nearly seventy five west side houses with con demned chimneys. He explained that he obtained it from the office of Fire Chief Paul F. Dolan. Grabe asserts that the chimneys listed are those declared defective by official investigators. He contends that he and another workman, Herbert Mefford are using the list, available to the public, only owners for an opportunity to do the repair job, but that they do not masquerade in spurious official titles. Chief Dolan explained that no one is given authority to make official chimney inspections except a fire department or city building depart ment representative. At present he said these representatives are E. P. Kohout of the fire department and A. B. Barker, assistant city building inspector. However, the chief declares that the records of condemned defec tive chimneys are open to the pub lic at the city hall and fire station and that there is nothing to pre vent a workman with a copied list making an honest solicitation for the necessary work.
