After a Spanish woman has pissed the age of thirty, her beauty vanishes like a dream. The Spaniards are un gallant enough to say that women should die at that age. It seems un fortunate that they should so soon whither and grow stout, coarse and wrinkled. They use so much powder that it dries and hardens the skin, and to good soap many of them are arrang ers. But a young Spanish girl is an attractive object. Give her.4 becomin dress, and place in her hand a fan, an she becomes almost irresistible, .One cannot but marvel at the witchery and grace the fan, thing of paper, lace or silk, possesses in her hand. It must be an accomplishment born with them, for the tiniest child handles hers with ease. They have as many fans as Flora Mc Flimsy had bonnets, for no costume is complete without a fan to match. But, charming as they are, they are not highly cultivated’; their education is limited. A few of the common branches, with a smattering of French and Ital ian, a little music and dancing, finishes it. They are very indolent, but that is the result of the climate ;eating, dreas ing, a great deal of sleeping, a walk g oing to church, a little fancy work, Alls their day, the monotony of which is occasionally relieved by a little flirta tion that may consist of a smile, a lance and a whispered word on the Alameda ; they are too closely watched to admit a brisker one. Not until the wedding ring has been placed upon her finger can a Spanish woman enjoy full liberty, which is, all things considered, Wise arrangement.
